Sanitation Through 4,500 Years of Human History

Established in 1992 by Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, a pioneer of social sanitation in India, the Sulabh International Museum of Toilets is one of Time Magazine’s top rated unusual museums globally. The museum addresses a vital yet tabood subject: how humanity has handled human waste from ancient Mohenjo-Daro civilizations to 21st-century eco-friendly flush technology.

Rare Artifacts & Royal Curiosities

The collection spans three historical eras: Ancient, Medieval, and Modern. Among its most curious items are replicas of French royal commodes, including a chair modeled after King Louis XIV's throne—which reportedly allowed the monarch to execute courtly duties uninterrupted.

The museum also documents humor and poetry associated with sanitation, showcasing vintage toilet paper rolls, chamber pots from Victorian England, and mobile toilet carts used during 19th-century military campaigns.
